The
Ritchie girls appreciate all
that Sapulpa Veterinary Hospital does to keep their
horse healthy. Kelsey, 12 years old, Katie, 11 years old
and Kiley, 7 years old enjoy riding and showing in 4-H,
Paint, Pinto, Palomino and Open Shows.
Kelsey is
currently showing a four year old Paint gelding named
The Flashback Kid. “Kid” was purchased from Jess Herd in
July 2006. With limited showing, Kelsey and Kid have won
two overall high point youth awards in the Greater
Oklahoma Paint Horse Club and are currently leading for
the GOPHC year end high point 13 & Under.
Kelsey and
Kid competed at the 2007 Pinto World Championship Show
and were finalists in Showmanship and Horsemanship 11 &
Under. They also competed at the 2007 Oklahoma State
Championship 4-H Show in Enid and placed 5th in
Showmanship, 4th in Horsemanship and 10th in Trail.
Lisa White
made Kelsey a beautiful new showmanship outfit for the
State 4-H Show. Minutes before her Showmanship class
started, Kelsey accidentally stepped in a mud hole, and
mud went all the way up to her knee on her Showmanship
pants. Kelsey’s mom and Grandma quickly went to work on
the baby blue pants and with only seconds to spare
Kelsey made it to the gate just in time to perform her
Showmanship pattern!
Katie enjoys showing Skippen Mandy Dude, a beautiful 20
year old Palomino mare. Katie says that Mandy is the
sweetest horse anyone could ever ask for. Katie and
Mandy have been teamed up for 1 ½ years and during their
show career they have won five high point 9-11 trophy
buckles at 4-H shows.
Katie and
Mandy’s most exciting win was when they were awarded
State Champion 9-11 Western Pleasure at the 2007 4-H
State Champion Show in Enid, OK. They received a
beautiful engraved trophy buckle. Katie and Mandy
recently received another high point buckle at the 4-H
Free Fair and Katie indicated with all her trophy
buckles it is hard to decide which buckle to wear.
Kiley has been riding her pony, Coco, since she was
three years old. “Coco” has been in the family for
nearly 20 years and has safely taught four girls how to
ride. It is Kiley who enjoys riding Coco the most.
Kiley and
Coco have been showing in Open Shows for four years
bringing home lots of blue ribbons! Because Kiley is
very close to outgrowing Coco, she has started riding
her Mom’s Quarter Horse gelding, Doc Holiday. Kelsey
also shows Doc in speed events at 4-H and Open Shows.
In addition to showing horses Kelsey and Katie are also
members of the Tulsa County 4-H Horse Club Judging Team.
The Junior Judging Team won the title of 2007 Overall
High Point Team at the World Championship Paint Show in
Fort Worth, Texas.
In 2006
Katie Ritchie was the High Point Junior Individual at
the World Show and in 2007 Kelsey Ritchie was named High
Point Junior Individual. The team is coached by Ty
Cunningham.
Kelsey, Katie and Kiley would like to thank their
grandparents, Jerry and Kay Inman, for making it
possible to have these treasured horses.
We
purchased Zip Bartime,
a 4-year old Palomino gelding, in February
through Jess and Maureen Herd. Jess has
successfully shown many of Mr. Big Zipper’s
foals, and they are beautiful movers. Zip
Bartime is about as natural of a mover as I’ve
seen. This is his first year to be shown.
At
the Palomino Memorial Day Circuit we received
the Circuit Award in Amateur Western Pleasure
and Jess received the Circuit Award in Jr.
Western Pleasure. At the Quarter Horse Holiday
Circuit in July we received the Circuit Award in
Nov. Am Western Pleasure, and at the Palomino
World Show Jess and Zip Bartime were the Reserve
World Champion in Jr. Western Pleasure and Zip
Bartime and I placed 7th in Amateur Western
Pleasure.
There are more upcoming shows this year that
we’re looking forward to competing in. We intend
to add additional classes…perhaps Horsemanship
will be next.
Zip Bartime’s barn name happens to be “Kimmy”,
so I thought pink would be the perfect color to
wear. Actually, as I’ve gotten to know him, the
name Kimmy fits him perfectly, and the color
pink, well it has a deeper meaning as it
represents those who have received their own
blue ribbons in fighting cancer. We’re all
winners!

The Murphy
Family says "Thank you for keeping our horses healthy and
getting them better when they're not."
CeeAnna Munoz is eight
years old and she has been competing in barrel racing events
on her bay mare, Foxie, since October 2005. CeeAnna has
been riding horses since she was five years old. In
addition to last June winning the 3 D Junior Average in
Claremore, CeeAnna and Foxie have won jackpots all over.
What an awesome team this rider and horse combination is!
CeeAnna’s mother, Janet, would describe Foxie as a “Miss
Priss”. She has more personality than any other horse
they’ve owned. In other words, she is all girl. If you ask
eight-year-old CeeAnna what she would like to be when she
grows up, she will tell you a Horse Veterinarian…and she
wants to work with Dr. White. Congratulations CeeAnna and
Foxie for all of your accomplishments.

In
recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are featuring
two local riders who have shared the experience in the diagnosis
and treatment with courage and friendship and a common love for
their horses and riding.
While
undergoing treatment, Melanie Van Sickle aboard her paint
gelding Poco Gamble (right), rode three days a week with her
friend Nancy Tolbert riding her Arabian gelding Arazi Fire. The
friends logged 500 miles over 11 months and never missed a ride.
Melanie has been healthy for over four years now. The full
article can be found in the October 2005 issue of Horse
and Rider Magazine entitled "Pink Ribbon Riders".
Originally from
Texas, Josie Dawn Robison is a 16 year old now living in
Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Josie is the daughter of Tonia and
Scott Robison, and began riding at the age of three. Her
mom, Tonia, began training their 10 year old Quarter horse
gelding, Skeeter D, to run barrels and soon Josie started
her career competing in high school rodeos. Together, she
and Skeeter D won several local competitions.
In late December
2002, Skeeter D was found exhibiting signs of colic. Their
local veterinarian was summoned and he recommended the horse
be brought immediately to the doctors at Sapulpa Vet
Hospital. After a thorough exam, it was determined Skeeter D
was a surgical candidate and surgery was performed. Skeeter
D responded well to the surgery with a big heart and
incredible courage, just as he did in competition. He was
released to go home after 9 days and after a well deserved
3-month rest, Skeeter D was allowed to slowly resume his
training routine.
Recently, Josie
called Dr. DeRoy White, DVM at Sapulpa Veterinary Hospital,
to thank him and his staff for the care given Skeeter D.
She mailed photos of recent competitions in which they
participated. We congratulate Josie and Skeeter on their
success.
Shelby is a 6-year-old
from Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She is the daughter of Cody and Stacy
Strickland. Shelby attends 1st grade at Prettywater school and
began riding when she was two years old. Her dad competes in
calf roping and her Mom has competed for the past 20 years in
English and Western Riding.
This is Shelby's first
year to rodeo. Her pony, Ashes, is an 8 year old Quarter Pony
mare. Together they compete in NYRA and NBHA. Currently Shelby
is standing 2nd in the NYRA in the 6 & Under class. She finished
5th in Average at Cavalcade in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, in 12 & Under
in poles. This photo is from NYRA at Circle C arena in Berryhill,
Oklahoma.
